Resources for Parents of Deaf Children
Deaf children born to Deaf parents often have access to sign language which helps facilitate typical language development and their communication skills. However, this is different for deaf children born to hearing parents who have little or no experience with Deaf people or the Deaf community. As a result, hearing parents with deaf children sometimes find that they lack the resources and support they need in order to raise a deaf child. They often have to navigate the confusion of what educational and communication options best suit their child - oral or sign. Such parents deal with cycles of grief, self-doubt and find that they have to confront their biases and assumptions about deafness.
